General Duties:
Performs rotational assignments to process and review applications in the following programs: Concealed Handguns, Metal Registration, Controlled Substances Registration, Private Security and Vehicle Inspection.
Reviews and evaluates a variety of applications, supporting documents and various databases to determine the eligibility of applicants. Recognizes and evaluates records of cash submissions.
Applies established departmental procedures and regulations and knowledge of statutory requirements to assure accuracy and completenes! s of data.
Maintains records associated with license, perm! it and registration application, fee payments, violations, and completes necessary procedures to approve or deny applications.
Researches information to resolve customer service problems.
Initiates correspondence for return of monies by State Warrants as needed.
Collects statistics of programs activity for routine and non-routine reports summarizing information in a finished format for dissemination using personal computerized spreadsheet software.
Utilizes word processing software to compose correspondence and form letters, design forms and assists in drafting office procedures and operational guidelines.
Communicates with the public in person, by telephone, e-mail, or regular correspondence, fax or electronically. Interprets and explains statutes, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, codes, directories, catalogs and reference lists on a daily basis.
Reviews and verifies new and updated information from a variety of sources to determine continu! ed eligibility for current or pending licensees, including license, permit and registration applications, which includes passport photos, citizenship, naturalization and resident cards, related training, experience, and examinations, driver license, regulatory agencies, instructors, vehicle inspection stations, look-up State Identification (SID) numbers in Computerized Criminal History (CCH).
Operates a personal computer in a local area network configuration and using several software and imaging systems to query, enter, retrieve and delete data stored in the licensing and registration multiple databases, other department databases, and databases hosted by other state and federal agencies.
May assist with special research projects to provide management staff with information for responding to legislative requests and for planning and implementing new operating programs.
May train or assist co-workers with learning new work procedures.

Education and Experience:
Education and! Experience
Graduation from standard senior high school or the equivalent plus one (1) year work experience that includes a computer (word processing, database management or spreadsheet applications) and direct telephone or personal contact serving customers utilizing the application of rules, regulations, policies and procedures for administrative purposes. One (1) year or more in customer service, clerical, or administrative support work.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation and composition, and arithmetic.
Knowledge of business office practices and the capabilities and limitations of computer applications in processing data of many types.
Knowledge of principle systems of both paper and electronic filing (alphabetical, numerical, chronological, geographical and subject content methods).
Skill in operating a personal computer accurately at moderate speed using database, word processing, and spreadshee! t software, as well as other general office equipment.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of information processed and observed in the work environment.
Ability to work effectively in an open office environment with frequent interruptions, distractions, and changing priorities, a moderate noise level, and high but fluctuating, levels of time/volume/pressure.
Ability to communicate and interact effectively with co-workers, other Department employees and officials, representatives of other state agencies, federal agencies, city and county agencies, attorney firms and general public.
Ability to understand and effectively apply complex oral and written instructions, procedures, policies, laws, rules and regulations and to effectively train and guide employees in their applications.

Supplemental information:
DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group and state title will be transferred with no salary chan! ge (ex: Customer Service Rep II in DLD who moves to a Customer Service ! Rep II in RSD).

DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase up to 3.4%.

Salary is contingent upon qualifications and is subject to salary administration and budgetary restrictions.

Employment testing required for candidates selected to go before the oral interview board. Candidates will be notified via email provided on the application of the required tests

Physical or Other Special Requirements

Ability to perform repetitious work in a confined area and to lift and move twenty-five (25) pounds of storage boxes on an as needed basis.
May travel infrequently several times a year for periods of short duration (one [1] week or less away from Headquarters to attend meetings and presentations).

Valid Texas dri! ver license required. If hired with a valid out of state driver license, a Texas license must be obtained within ninety (90) days of moving to Texas. If moving within the state of Texas, a valid Texas license must be obtained within thirty (30) days.

State of Texas retirees may be rehired for full-time, non-commissioned positions only under very specific circumstances.
