Ocean Conservancy’s Fish Conservation Program is a dynamic, multiâ€faceted initiative focused on achieving sustainable fisheries in our nation’s waters with a particular emphasis on the Gulf of Mexico. Ocean Conservancy has played a key leadership role in transitioning our nation’s fisheries towards a sustainable future. Past accomplishments include securing improvements to our nation! ’s fisheries management laws in 1996 and 2007 and the establ! ishment of a science based rebuilding plan for red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico which is leading to a rebound in the health of the population. We will continue this leadership role by ensuring the development and implementation of laws and policies consistent with sustainable fisheries and work with regional managers and fishery stakeholders in the Gulf of Mexico region to secure sustainable fish populations, a healthy Gulf ecosystem and vibrant coastal communities. The British Petroleum (BP) Deepwater Horizon oil disaster threatens the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem, its fisheries and a way of life for fishing communities. In addition to the longstanding threats facing regional fisheries, the Fish Conservation Program works with other Ocean Conservancy experts to ensure that new threats posed by this disaster are adequately incorporated into management policies and work with regional managers and stakeholders to ensure the a full restoration and enhancement of the Gulf of Mexic! o ecosystem and its dependent communities is achieved. OC envisions a healthy and productive Gulf of Mexico that supports resilient ocean ecosystems and coastal communities.

The Fisheries Scientist provides support for Ocean Conservancy’s scienceâ€based advocacy efforts to secure sustainable fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico, implement key conservation and sustainability provisions of the recent amendments to our nation’s fishery management laws, and transition fisheries management in the Gulf of Mexico toward an ecosystem-based approach. Additionally, this position works with a team of Ocean Conservancy scientists, attorneys, policy advocates, media and outreach staff to track the national implementation of our fishery management laws, defend core conservation provisions in the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, and prepare for the next reauthorization of the Act.
Specific Responsibili! ties:
Acquires, analyzes, and interprets fisheriesâ€related in! formation and data to characterize the status, behavior and performance of fisheries, key fish stocks, and fishery management bodies and prepares reports and papers detailing the findings of these investigations in order to advance Ocean Conservancy goals of fishery conservation and sustainability.
Monitors the development of science products in support of management and participates in the process of generating scientific advice for fisheries management purposes.
Identifies gaps in our knowledge of fisheries science and management and formulates strategies for filling those gaps.
Analyzes current and proposed fisheries management policies to ensure they are scientifically sound and achieving conservation mandates.
Advocates for sound science in policy and management decisions and helps communicate this need to a media audience.
Uses scientific information, findings and their policy implications to develop strategies for affectin! g the changes in policy and management practices necessary for achieving sustainable fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico region.
Provides support and analysis for national implementation, defense, and reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.
Develops and leads Ocean Conservancy’s work to transition Gulf of Mexico fisheries management toward an ecosystem-based approach, including developing alternative management strategies to MSY, developing effective work plans and budgets, and leading relevant team activities.
Provides support for Ocean Conservancy’s Gulf Restoration work as appropriate, including monitoring fisheries assessments with regard to inclusion of oil-related science and data and assisting in development of marine restoration options.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree or higher in fisheries science, aquatic ecology, environmental, or! natural resources science, or closely related field.
Minimum ! of 3†5 years professional experience with the acquisition, organization, analysis, synthesis, interpreting and reporting of a range of the scientific information and data.
Experience and proficiency in data management, conducting statistical and modeling analyses.
Excellent working knowledge of MS Suites, statistical analysis, programming, and modeling packages.
Familiarity with US fishery management regulations and policy, and the practices of fishery management agencies required.
Experience using scientific information to affect policy changes in fisheries or other natural resource management arenas and the ability to clearly formulate and communicate complex ideas orally and in written form and complete writing assignments on time.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in collaboration with a diverse project team.
Ability to work with minimal supervision, set priorities among competing projects, meet objectives ! and deadlines, to resolve routine problems independently, and to recognize and work with supervisor to resolve complex or unusual problems.
Ability to manage programs, grants, budgets, contracts, and supervise professionals.
Some travel and occasional long hours when required by project objectives.
