Position Title: Senior Firmware Design Engineer
Department: Research & Development

BASIC FUNCTION

  • Under minimal supervision designs, develops, modifies and evaluates embedded system components for medical devices.
Computer software systems including our Operating Room Integration System (SwitchPoint), ConnectSuite IP Video and Studio3 Media Asset Management.

SwitchPoint Control Systems
Stryker's board-level integration systems and are designed specifically for use in the Operating Room (OR). The SwitchPoint Infinity product line is Stryker’s router of choice for fully loaded surgical suites. The SwitchPoint Element is designed specifically for smaller surgical suites. Both are fully HD ready.

ConnectSuite IP Video
Stryker’s IP video platform makes the OR more accessible for teaching and remote monitoring. Conn! ectSuite utilizes the hospital’s network to facilitate video! conferencing and broadcasting from within the OR.

RESPONSIBILITIES
New Product Ideas and Proposals

  • Provides information and drives the estimation of project complexity, feasibility and cost at the concept stage of product development.
Defining User Needs

  • Drives the development of user requirements for new products.
Defining Functional Specifications

  • Drives the development of lower level engineering specifications from user requirements.
Patent Investigation

  • Works with patent attorneys to investigate potential patent infringements and develop new patents.
Benchmarking Designs

  • Gathers and analyzes data to benchmark and compare the performance of multiple products using specifications or empirical test data.
  • Assesses which products to benchmark against a potential design.
Concept Review

  • Develop! s and analyzes multiple solutions to user problems potentially prototyping one or more options to provide proof of concept.
Selecting Suppliers

  • Identifies and assesses appropriate suppliers for tools and components.
  • Audits suppliers to assess the reliability and quality to determine if they should be used for future designs.
Risk Management

  • Provides information and uses historical data to assess the risk of different scenarios and be able to manage risk through design improvements, better labeling, or etc.
Product Design

  • Designs prototype and debug solutions of high complexity.
  • Drives the integration of modules to form a product.
  • Works with mechanical and electrical engineers to ensure that all modules will integrate properly.
Design Reviews

  • Drives the design review process to ensure that all designs are reviewed to improve the quali! ty.
OEM Component Selection

  • Specifies OEM ! components and works with OEM to customize a product for our needs.
Designing for Maintainability

  • Performs Design for Maintainability on designs early in the design to architect solutions that well documented, extensible and leverage-able and diagnose-able.
Manufacturing Plans

  • Support planning manufacturing of a product with the manufacturing team.
  • Looks for holes in the manufacturing plan of a product and finds ways to fill those holes.
510(k) Submissions

  • Drives the assessment of the classification of a product including the possible submission of a 510(k) with Regulatory.
Process Validation

  • Assists in process validation including the preparation of work instructions, procurement of materials, and resolution of issues as they arise in a build.
Implementation Review

  • Reviews designs with marketing to ensure that they meet u! ser requirements.
  • Anticipates potential shortcomings in a product’s ability to meet user needs effectively and works to minimize them.
Test Plans and Design Verification/Validation

  • Creates and executes test protocols.
  • Uses historical data to develop effective test plans.
  • Looks for holes in a test plan and works to fill them by modifying the plan or performing testing not necessarily specified in the plan.
  • Debugs problems as they arise during verification and validation.
Design Documentation

  • Documents all designs with the appropriate drawings utilizing internal procedures such as the Engineering Change Order (ECO) process. Work with document control to ensure that proper revisions are released to manufacturing and that proper revision control is maintained for electronic design data (solid models, firmware source code, PCB source files, etc.).
Customer Preference Testin! g

  • Supports the setup of product demonstrations and en! sures that customer feedback is used to improve products.
  • Plans ahead of time to determine necessary information required from customers to improve products.
Internationalization

  • Drives the international release of products.
  • Understands international regulations to assess what needs to be completed to release a product internationally.
Complaints and User Issue Resolution

  • Works with quality and tech support to troubleshoot problems, trend complaints, and analyze data to improve overall product quality and ensure that customer satisfaction is achieved through issue resolution.
Product Maintenance

  • Works with operations teams to maintain existing products; resolving issues with vendors, and managing new product revisions.
Project Tracking and Status Reporting

  • Tracks project progress and presents periodic status updates to supervisor, project tea! ms and/or senior staff.
Tradeshows

  • Attends tradeshows related to current product lines to gather information/knowledge concerning technology and industry trends to resolve future design problems.
Sales Meetings

  • Attends Sales Meetings for the purpose of setting up and training the sales representatives on new and existing products.
Customer Interaction

  • Visits customer sites to discuss products/projects, and observe products in use.
Mentoring

  • Mentors more junior engineers to help them improve.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager.
  • Has the independence and authority to perform required tasks to ensure all provisions of quality system are met.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • 5-10 years experience in firmware design and development
  • Expert in C development in embedded environment
  • Experience in all aspects of! Software Development Lifecycle: requirements, architecture, design, de! velopment, test, launch and product sustainment/customer support
  • Excellent communication skills â€" ability to communicate technical information to a wide audience from peers through upper management.
  • Strong understanding of electrical design â€" ability to read and understand schematics and electrical datasheets
Our current microprocessor platforms (nice to have experience, but not required):

  • Freescale HCS08 Microcontrollers
  • NXP LPC series ARM Microprocessors
  • TI C6747 series DSPs
  • Altera NiOS II Embedded Processors
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational, problem solving, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate small hand tools (e.g. pliers, screwdrivers, hammer, wrenches, etc.), power tools and test/inspection equipment.
  • Design and implement firmware with a variety of embedded ! development tools.
  • Benchmark embedded systems designs and implementations
EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. Qualifications/Work Experience: Percent Travel Required: 10
