The Digital Forensic Consultant assists law firms and corporations in designing data collection strategies to identify and forensically collect electronic documents quickly and efficiently for the purposes of electronic discovery using a variety of industry standard tools and protocols. The Digital Forensic Consultant performs specialized forensic examinations, analyses and data recovery on a multitude of digital media devices and data types and assists sales personnel in a “Subject Matter Expert” capacity as needed. This is a client-facing position that requires an extensive technical and consulting skillset. The position is home-based and requires extensive travel.

Candidates must be able to function in a variety of office environments as well as an occasional “non-standard” environment such as a laboratory, warehouse or hotel room. Candidate must be able to lift and travel with a variety of hardware and software, of which one “travel kit” may weigh 50+ lbs. Extensive (up to 75+%) travel both domestic and international, is required and may include weekends, evenings and off-hours.

Primary Responsibilities Include:
Work with clients to create a data collection protocol that can be triggered when litigation is pending or imminent.

Create and execute specialized data collection plans.

Assess client information assets in a networked environment to determine where evidence may reside.

Effectively communicate and interact with external clients, attorneys and IT personnel, as well as internal sales, production, and project management personnel in order to ensure client requirements are met.

Follow proper evidence media handling and chain-of-custody procedures.

Document procedures and findings of each case and enter into project management system.

Create and provide comprehensive reports to the client based on their needs.

Effectively problem-solve and troubleshoot in response to issues that may arise.

Research, utilize and maintain proficiency in advanced methods, tools, and trends in data collection, digital forensics and e-discovery.

Research, test, and recommend various software and hardware products.

Prepare affidavits and give expert witness testimony in court, as needed.

Mentor and provide support to Digital Forensic Analyst team members, as needed.

Provide confident, clear, effective communication exhibiting extensive professional experience obtained in data collection and digital forensic analysis with internal and external customers through all forms of communication including direct contact, conference calls, e-mail, etc.

Work with management to determine best practices to use in conducting data collections and digital forensics investigations.

Creatively research, develop and deliver recommendations that contribute to practice development initiatives in order to advance our business performance and deliver new solutions to meet changing business needs.

Perform in-depth digital forensic examination of computer hard drives, mobile devices and other media containing sensitive client data to include:

File system analysis

Advanced registry, Internet history, chat records, and email analysis

Metadata extraction and analysis

Detection and recovery of deleted, corrupted, and fragmented files and other unallocated data in context as they exist on the media

Perform keyword or string searches

Perform cross-media analytical correlation

Attempt decryption of password-protected and encrypted files

Required Experience:
Professional Skills:
Proven ability to communicate and convey technical information effectively and concisely to a wide variety of audiences including clients, attorneys, and IT professionals.

Requires strong multi-tasking, organizational, writing, briefing, and analytical and problem solving skills.

Ability to work in a fast paced, high-pressure environment and effectively manage time in order to meet strict deadlines and time constraints.

Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

Technical Skills:
Demonstrated experience using EnCase, FTK, and other industry standard software and tools to perform data collection and digital forensic investigations.

Hands-on experience with write-blocking devices and a wide range of other digital forensic hardware and tools.

Professional experience and knowledge of computer and mobile device hardware, network architecture, operating systems, file types, and e-mail based systems (corporate and web-based).

Qualified examiners are required to maintain current knowledge of industry standards and practices.

Ability to plainly communicate the differences, options and most desirable data collection, digital forensics, and data recovery methodologies given a certain factual scenario.

Excellent technical report and affidavit writing skills.

Subject matter expert in DOS, Windows, MAC and UNIX preferred.

Education & Experience:
Minimum of four to five years professional experience with digital forensics investigations and electronic data collection related to e-discovery.

Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or closely related field is preferred.

One or more industry certifications in digital forensics (i.e. CCE, EnCE, ACE, CFCE or CISSP)

Experience being deposed or testifying in court is strongly preferred.

Consulting experience a major plus.
