Temporary Seasonal Substitute Crossing Guard (Reserved for Public Works Neighborhood Connectivity Employees Only

This position will substitute for other crossing guards for North Central Elementary Schools in Austin.

This position requires the use of a personal cell phone and vehicle and mileage. A cell phone stipend will be reimbursed at the City’s standard rate.

A criminal background check will be conducted.

This is a part-time seasonal position.

Pay Range

$10.50 per hour

Hours

Monday through Friday, 6:15 to 8:15 AM and 1:45 to 3:45 PM (20 hours a week) Must maintain prompt and regular attendance.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

DUTIES , FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1. Under general supervision, guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at such places as street crossings near schools, railroad crossings and construction sites.

2. Fill in for other crossing guards as needed.

3. Some physical effort involved such as: walking, standing and lifting.

4. Work in extreme weather conditions

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

1. Ability to travel during the morning and afternoon peak hours

2. Ability to communicate verbally in order to instruct children on how to cross the street safely and when to enter the street.

3. Ability to clearly communicate verbally with supervisor, school employees, other city employees and the general public.

4. Must be able to hear traffic approaching the crosswalk and children’s conversation.

5. Possess the visual acuity to judge speed and distance of approaching vehicles

6. Ability to respond quickly to potential emergency situations

7. Ability to carry a stop sign and/or flag, weighing between 2-5 pounds in an upright position for a continuous 1-2 minutes each crossing activity

8. Ability to lift up to 5 pounds to set up traffic cones, if necessary.

9. Ability to bend from the waist and/or twist when necessary.

10. Ability to bend arms and push or pull a child weighing up to 100 pounds when necessary.

11. Standing or walking continuously for up to 2 hours

12. Stepping up and down off a 6 inch high curb for up to 2 hours

13. Ability to walk or stand in extreme temperatures or inclement weather for long periods of time.
