Vice President / Director of Compliance

Location: Houston, Texas

• Serves as the sole in-house lawyer for a privately held, carefully-staffed growing insu! rance holding company system that has four property and casualty insurance companies;
• Manages a 3-member non-attorney compliance team primarily focused on insurance-related compliance;
• Will continue to build/enhance existing legal compliance policies and procedures infrastructure;
• Responds in real time to a wide variety of legal matters as they “come in the door;”
• Reviews/drafts routine business contracts entered into by insurance companies;
• Coordinates litigation matters with Claims Department;and
• Coordinates board meetings of insurance companies and prepares Board minutes and unanimous consents

We are not looking for tenured General Counsel or Primarily Claims litigation focus. Experience in each of insurance company, regulator, and law firm experience would be ideal.

Requirements:

• J.D.;
• Minimum of five (5) years of insurance corporate, regulatory and/or litigation e! xperience
• Must have advised/represented insurance com! panies;
• Must have ability to lead and manage people;
• Is pragmatic, versatile, and able to provide legal solutions:
• Communicates clearly and succinctly with a professional demeanor;
• Is capable and willing to meet short deadlines;
• Works well with other department managers to get the job done in real time; and
• Must have the ability to work constructively within a group that is regulated but driven by an entrepeneurial mindset

Preferred Attributes :

• Has experience in and understands both the admitted and surplus lines property and casualty insurance markets;
• Understands the regulatory requirements of and has worked successfully with one or more of Texas, Oklahoma and California Insurance Departments;
• Has solid general corporate law background in addition to solid insurance law background; and
• Is a self-starter who can identify what needs to be done from a legal perspe! ctive and knows how to secure necessary internal approvals to take the appropriate action.
