STARTING SALARY RANGE: $41,846 - $47,077 annually, plus excellent benefits
POSITION TITLE: Staff Attorney
DEPARTMENT: Texas Access to Justice Commission - Austin GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Develops Texas Access to Justice Commission (Commission) initiatives designed to improve the quality and quantity of access to justice for low-income people in Texas.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
1. Increases the capacity of legal service providers, courts, and pro bono attorneys to assist low-income people with their legal issues by providing staff support to the committees and task forces of the Commission and of the Supreme Court of Texas, including research, writing, and assistance with development and implementation of committee goals and objectives.
2. Works with the various constituents of the Commission to increase access to justice statewide, such as the courts, the private bar, bar associations, corporate counsel, legal service and pro bono providers, social service providers, communication and development professionals, and legislators.
3. Furthers the policy initiatives of the Commission by maintaining a working knowledge of national and statewide policy initiatives; conducting research and analysis of national and statewide access to justice efforts; assisting in the development of rules and legislative efforts to increase access to justice for poor Texans; and assisting in the strategic planning of the Commission.
4. Participates in planning, development, and implementation of the Commission programs, support services, and publications.
5. Increases awareness of access to justice issues by assisting in developing content for the Commission's newsletter, including writing and editing articles, and assisting in the maintenance of the statewide website for legal aid and pro bono attorneys.
6. Makes presentations to attorney groups, drafts reports, and prepares meeting materials relating to legal services to the poor.
7. Provides assistance and support services to legal aid and pro bono programs.
8. Assists in fundraising efforts of the Commission. Provides assistance and support services to legal aid and pro bono programs.
9. Answers public inquiries about legal assistance available to low-income people and pro bono opportunities.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Must be a licensed attorney. A minimum of two years related work experience. A demonstrated knowledge of, and involvement in, legal services to the poor issues is strongly preferred. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills when working with staff and various constituents, including members of the State Bar, the legal services community, and the public. Must demonstrate good writing, editing, proofreading and public speaking skills. Ability to speak Spanish desirable but not required. Travel, evening and weekend work required, as needed.
